Since 2013, Canada consistently implements the Action Plan for Faster Family Reunification. The main objective is to reduce the consideration period of submitted applications under the family sponsorship programs, and in particular on sponsoring parents and / or grandparents.

Since 2014, in the framework of this plan, the Citizenship and Immigration Canada sets an annual quota for new applications under this type of sponsorship. In 2014 and 2015 the limit was set to 5,000 applications per year. Quota for 2016 has to be announced by the Government in December 2015. However, even if it will be increased in comparison with previous years, considering the number of people willing to apply, this quota-2016 will be taken up in the first days of the coming year. The forecast for 2017 on the admission of new applications will be known only in 2016.

In addition, the possibility of sponsoring parents and / or grandparents was almost removed from the Humanitarian and Compassionate Program.

Alternatively, in order to reunite children and parents, Canada proposes a Super Visa program, which offers the possibility of a multiple-entry visitor visa in Canada for parents and / or grandparents for 10 years with up to 2 years stay at a time, and its partial extension inside Canada.

Each of these aforementioned options of reunification with parents and grandparents, who remained in other countries, has its own rules and requirements. Both options impose serious financial obligations on the sponsor in Canada. Every year these requirements increase. Finance status is the main criterion in this immigration program, although other criteria are no less significant.
